You would almost forget it, but the Koeneschans is one of the last visible remnants of the Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. This was the first important defence line in the Netherlands. Even though the French in disaster year 1672 ('the people were helpless, helpless and desperate...') ravaged our country, they also perfected the waterline.
The Koeneschans served to defend the high Slangeweg to IJsselstein. With the construction of the New Dutch Waterline, almost all forts and entrenchments have disappeared.
