Although there have been no less than three different castles on the Stoutenburg estate throughout the centuries, only one remains: the present Klein Stoutenburg Castle. This estate was built in 1888 and stands to the south of the Barneveldse Beek. The earlier castles were located on the north side.
This is where a number of the many streams in Gelderse Valley converge. The castle is therefore situated in a stream valley. The surrounding estate consists of park woods, wooded banks and meadows and was built around the same time as the castle. Because of this variation and the combination with the clean seepage water that comes from the ground, special plant species grow here. In the park forest, you will be welcomed by some 66 species of birds, including the lesser spotted hawk, bullfinch and tawny owl. With luck, you might even see the kingfisher!
Today, the castle is a residential centre for the elderly. Next to the castle is the Koetshuis, which houses an information centre. Here you can go as a cyclist or hiker.
