Kempen Bakery Museum De Grenswachter is perhaps the cosiest, but certainly the tastiest museum in the Kempen. In the old bakery (originally the granary at the mill), real bakers bake according to a special recipe. Here you can follow a bread-making workshop or Brabant sausage bread.
De Grenswachter is one of four bakery museums in the Netherlands. Of course, the name was inspired by its location close to the Belgian border, but the mill also used to play a role in the life of the smuggler. The mill was visited daily by people who milled grain there to bake their own bread. Therefore, the mulder (miller) often knew exactly what was going on in the village. He knew when smugglers went out at night. If it came to his notice that the commissaires would be patrolling that night, he would put the sails in the ‘danger’ position. The mulder would agree in advance with the smugglers which position to use.
The nostalgic 1850s sweet shop, built by an LTS from Eindhoven, is also a delight to see.
