In the Netherlands they started fishing in the Middle Ages. Fire beacons were placed to warn the fishermen off the coast. Katwijk aan Zee also had such a beacon that was threatened by advancing water. In 1605 the new lighthouse was built more inland. The 30-meter high tower can be climbed in good weather.
