Juliana Park - Veendam

N 53.104094946139 / E 6.8773395207889

The charming Julianapark is located in the centre of Veendam. The park was laid out in 1913 and was named Julianapark in 1945, in honour of Princess Juliana's marriage to Prince Bernhard. Over the years it has become a popular place for relaxation in nature. The graceful ponds, old trees and winding footpaths make it a beautiful green space in the city. Not only people, but also animals know to find their way to the park. Birds such as mute swans, common terns, common wagtails and even kingfishers are sometimes spotted here.

The park's pond is home to the artwork The Mermaid. This statue was created in 1963 by artist Pieter Starreveld and stood in front of the Veenlust Theatre for many years.

A large part of the park is the Veendam municipality's general cemetery. The Commonwealth War Graves are also located within the cemetery. Ten English Royal Air Force crew members who died during the Second World War are buried here. A war memorial can be found at the foot of the Protestant Church on the edge of the park.
