Jheronimus Bosch is a famous Boschian. He was born in Den Bosch around 1450 and died here in 1516. His family was artistic: both his grandfather and two brothers were painters in Nijmegen. His parental home in 's-Hertogenbosch was probably the family studio. Although we know him as Jheronimus Bosch, his real name was Joen van Aken. His first name Joen occurs almost nowhere else than in 's-Hertogenbosch. Joen introduced the name Bosch himself in order to show the connection with his city.
His art was progressive, different from other artists of the late Middle Ages. In his paintings, you often see many different figures and symbols. The theme is usually a warning against man's sinfulness and an exhortation to lead a pious life as a Christian, after which you will have a happy life in the hereafter. In the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center, you can admire a collection of some 25 paintings and 16 drawings, including a number of beautiful triptychs.
