As a child, Vincent was introverted. He was a taciturn, somewhat introverted boy. But someone who could be moody at times and who had a mind of his own. He particularly stood out because of his reddish curls.
The young Van Gogh had an erratic school career. When he turned eight, he went to the village school. For reasons that are unclear, Vincent was taken out a year later. After this, he was home-schooled. At the age of 11, Vincent's parents sent him to Jan Provily's boarding school. He claimed he learned little from this school. He later wrote: ‘...while the rest of my life is absolutely as nonsensical as when I was in a boarding school at the age of 12 where I learnt absolutely nothing.’ After two years, Vincent was admitted to the Royal HBS Willem II in Tilburg. He was good at language at school, but did not show that he had above-average artistic talent.
