Karl Jacob van Beekum studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences. In 1936, he received the Royal Grant for Painting. In 1955, he traded Rotterdam for Stadskanaal, where this sculpture can also be found. The metal sculpture Knoalster Lorelei is based on the poem of the same name by the Groningen poet Geert Teis.
