Lolke van der Bij's Beacon of Overijssel, placed in 1991, stands on the river IJssel near the ferry. The wavy column, 12.5 metres high, symbolises the flowing waters of the IJssel, just like the wavy blue strip in the flag of the province of Overijssel. The ring around the wave can be read as the letter 'O' of Overijssel.
The artist works from geometric starting points, but the artworks still have a playful and open character. Van der Bij wants to capture the essence with as few frills as possible. He strives for simplicity, which is also evident in this work of art. Many of his works are executed in stainless steel, but in recent years he also combines different materials in his work.
