In 1243, Huis te Lathum was mentioned for the first time as a castle, as a land estate of the Count of Gelre. In the house live the important lords of Lathum, whose surname is also Van Lathum.
Besides the lords, Louis XIV of France also stayed in the house during the Dutch War in 1672. He consulted here about the city of Arnhem.
In the 18th century, the noble house deteriorated into a farm. For the first time it came into the hands of someone who was not a descendant of the Van Lathums. Baroness Van Heeckeren van Kell bought the house in 1915 and had it restored. Unfortunately, the house was severely destroyed during the Second World War. The owners thereafter restored it again.
This important house in Lathum has now been designated a National Monument. The oldest parts of the house are from the 15th century. It is now used as an art studio. It is not open to the public, but you can view it from the outside.
