Two horse traders wearing long coats, canes and caps, were captured in bronze by Katwijk sculptor Gerard Brouwer (Leiden 1951-2017) in 1990. The traditional horse market has been held here annually in September for centuries. A tile tableau in an oval concrete frame right around the corner of the square on the Hoofdstraat also tells of this famous horse market. The tableau shows a man with a horse walking towards the fortified town. It has the caption: 'Valkenburg Neerlands oudste paardenmarkt 2nd Wednesday in September'.
It was made in 1960 in the Valkenburg decorative arts studio Dick Ravelli & Co. by brothers Dick and Jacob Joseph Ravelli.
A small exhibition on Jacob Joseph Ravelli's ceramics is also set up in the Tower Museum directly behind the horse traders' statue. In addition, at the museum you will learn more about Valkenburg in World War II and the Roman history in the village through excavations.
