The Hopmanshuis (Hopman House), also known as the ‘House with 99 Windows’, is a historic building on Rodetorenplein in Zwolle. It was built around 1663 by the Zwolle merchant Claes de Cock as a trading warehouse. Originally, the building was half brick and half wood; the wooden part was built above the city moat so that ships could be unloaded directly.
In 1720, the building came into the possession of Jannes Nauta, a captain of the Zwolle civil guard, after whom the building was named. He had the building renovated, adding tall windows and a staircase to the front. The rear was also built in brick.
From 1843 the building was known as the ‘Nieuwe Stadsherberg’ (New City Inn) and was nicknamed the ‘House with 99 windows’ because of its many windows. Today the Hopmanshuis is used as office space and there is a restaurant in the basement.
