The corner of Marktsteeg and Burgwal used to be the city castle of the Van Breda family. A mansion was built on the foundations of this castle around 1850. The Hof van Breda was the former castle garden. The now lush red beech tree, was planted as a sapling in 1850.
On the listening bench in the courtyard, you can listen to the carillon of the New Tower. The carillon is also honoured in poem form. On one wall hangs a plaque by Ida Gerhardt with the poem ‘Het Carillon’. Finally, you will also find a bust of Kamper actor Henk van Ulsen (1927-2009). He played in many films, TV series and plays from the 1950s onwards. In 1980, he was even appointed Knight of the Order of Orange Nassau.
