In 1942, more and more Jews were called up to be put to work in German camps. For them, it was a choice between going to a camp with the fear of never returning alive, or going into hiding in the hope of not being discovered.

Bertus Zefat had hidden hiders in his chicken shed for a while, but when this became too dangerous, they had to go into the forest. In the Valtherbos, they built a hiding place with materials from the farm. A group of resistance fighters, who had joined Bertus, called themselves the Zefat group and provided food and drink for the hiders.

Although the den was discovered, the hiders managed to escape without leaving a trace in time and build a new hiding den. All 16 hiders who stayed there survived the war. Jan Hendriks and Bertus Zefat, the resistance fighters who assisted them during this period, unfortunately did not live to see the liberation.
