Heysterum Castle is an elongated rectangular main building with a square tower on either side. It is set in a small, simple landscaped park. It was built in the mid-18th century and its builder is not only the Amsterdam patrician Barbou family, but also the Van der Schoor family.
Heysterum suffered severely from the floods of the Meuse in 1993 and 1995. The country estate was bought by the Van Tienen-Lemmers couple in the latter year. They then thoroughly restored house and garden. Two other names for Heysterum are Heysteren and Heisterent. Both seem to indicate a connection with the word 'shrub'.
