Just outside the old fortified town of Heukelum, you'll find Heukelum Castle. The castle, which was first called Merckenburg Castle, was built in the Middle Ages. The van Arkel family were the first residents of the castle, which stands on the border of the provinces of Gelderland and South Holland. In the past, this place had to be well defended and the castle did this in cooperation with eight other surrounding castles. Heukelum Castle is the only one that still remains.
The castle can only be visited by written request, but of course you can always admire it from the outside.
