Harlinger Pottery & Tile Factory - Harlingen

N 53.1727998 / E 5.4466228

Harlingen has a centuries-long tradition of tile and pottery production. As early as the end of the 16th century (from 1598), pottery was baked and painted in the port city. The surrounding towns of Makkum and Bolsward followed suit. The last factory in Harlingen closed in 1942, but in 1972 the old craft was continued again by the Harlinger Pottery & Tile Factory.

Research was done on the historical recipe of clay mixture for the tiles, of the glaze and colours. Because of this knowledge, the factory employees are true craftsmen. All products are made like in the old days: 100% handwork.

The clay on which Harlingen is located proved very suitable for firing tiles and is abundant in north-west Friesland. Since 1598, millions of tiles and tens of thousands of dishes, bowls and vases have been produced and exported to other countries in northern Europe.

From Monday to Friday, you can visit the factory for all your questions, quietly look around at the beautiful products or take a guided tour (by appointment and from 10 people).
