On the west side of Utrecht, on the bank of the old Rhine, lies country estate Haarzuilens. The estate is characterised by the fairytale-like Kasteel de Haar, the village Haarzuilens with the red-and-white coloured shutters and the estates with the farms. For centuries, this area has been inhabited, cultivated and developed. The farmers of the Iron Age were the first to settle on the fertile river clay. Around 1900, Baron Etienne van Zuyelen van Nyevelt van de Haar built his neo-Gothic castle and moved the village.
Natuurmonumenten has owned the land around the castle since 2000. With small-scale agriculture, Natuurmonumenten is bringing back the rich farming nature with grazing cows, flowery meadows, many ditches and old crops into the landscape.
