In 1397, Elburg had just been founded and the bishop of Utrecht gave permission to build a parish church in this new city within the city walls. The church was built in Gothic style and dedicated to St. Nicolas, the patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
Around 1580, the church came into Protestant hands, who added an oak choir screen and two choir stalls to the interior. The spire was lost in a lightning strike in 1693 and was never rebuilt. During a thorough restoration in the 20th century, some remarkable wall paintings (frescoes) emerged under the layers of chalk. During the summer months, the church is open for visits and you can climb the church tower.
