The Johanneskerk was built in the 12th century. This church did not come out of the battle unscathed either. During the siege of Middelburg (1572-1574), the church's choir disappeared.
Inside the church, you will find a beautiful bluestone tombstone monument of Philibert van Tuyll van Serooskerke (1580-1639). The Van Tuyll family, from the Betuwe region, had bought Serooskerke in 1483 and were ardent supporters of the Spanish royal house. Philibert Tuyll van Serooskerke (1537-1579) was, among other things, stadholder of Bergen op Zoom and promoted the interests of the king of Spain.
According to tradition, he and several other loyal followers of Alva secretly approached some leaders of the Revolt in Veere. In Alva's name, Philibert promised these leaders riches if they put an end to the rebellion. Some of the leaders agreed and decided to blow up a gate of the city of Veere. The plan failed at the very last moment.
