Jan Jacobzn Bal, alias Huydecoper, buys a first piece of land here in 1608, on which stands a farm called De Gouden Hoef. After his father's death, Joan Huydecoper inherits this property and decides to build a new one. This is how Goudestein, one of the first country estates along the river Vecht, came into being. A grandson, with the same name, adds nearby Silversteyn to Goudestein in the 18th century. After his death in 1754, the house, perceived as dated, is demolished and a new country estate of the same name rises.
His widow stipulated in her will that this country estate should remain within the Huydecoper family. This wish was respected until the 20th century, after which the municipality of Maarssen bought it to use it as a town hall.
