Zuiderheide is best known for the presence of clearly visible burial mounds in the landscape. These prehistoric mounds in the landscape are mainly found
on moraines and other hills, such as Zuiderheide, which is part of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. This is where prominent members of the community and other important
people were buried. As lively as things were here three thousand years ago, Zuiderheide is quiet today.
The burial mounds are a silent reminder of how the inhabitants of the Early Bronze Age buried their dead. It was believed that the
deceased went to a new life after death. All kinds of items were buried with them: a dagger, hammers, an axe, a bracelet, bell cups or a drinking cup. Useful items
that would make life after death easier.
The largest concentration of burial mounds can be admired southeast of the extensive sand drift in the moorland landscape, the 'Kuil van Koppel'. Towards 't Bluk, right along the Oude Postweg you will find another burial mound.
During all the centuries to come, Zuiderheide ─ and the moors around it ─ remained practically undeveloped. That is quite special, because the
Randstad is nearby and cities like Hilversum, Amersfoort and Baarn have expanded enormously over the centuries. The beauty of Zuiderheide has been preserved because of a love of the
landscape and historical and cultural awareness. The rich flora and fauna of this heathland area is living proof of that.
