The Red Brook (Rothenbach) feeds the water mill and at the same time forms the national border here. The scoop wheel still lies exactly on the Dutch side. When the Gitstappermolen was built about 600 years ago, the borders were different and there was no national border.
Originally, the mill was made of wood, but around 1750, a stone mill building with two impellers was built. After the First World War, the oil mill with beater was removed and only corn was milled. The low round window next to the water wheel used to be the place where the water wheel of the oil mill used to be. The mill slowly but surely fell into disrepair. To make sure that the future of the mill was secured, the Friends of the Gitstappermolen Foundation was established.
