This giant tulip bulb was painted by painter Simon Balyon, born in The Hague in 1965. Raised in an artistic family - his brothers are all highly regarded art painters or graphic designers - he developed a passion for painting and for nature at an early age. He likes to let those two loves come together.
The Giant Bulb in Voorhout is an ode to the bulb barns, which are now iconic elements within the cultural-historical heritage of the Dune and Flowerbulb Region. Flower bulbs were laid out to dry on wooden racks in these sheds. There was also a workroom where the bulbs were peeled, sorted and packaged. Often there was also an office for management and administration.
On this tulip bulb, part of the art project GIANT TULIP BULBS, Balyon painted a bulb shed bulging with bulbs and almost bursting at the seams. The bulb stands on the grounds of De Tulperij, which has adopted the artwork.
