This giant tulip bulb was painted by artist Trude Hol, born in Baarn, raised in Wageningen, but now living in Lisse for more than 30 years.
Although the sector is increasingly mechanised nowadays, flower bulb cultivation was and remains labour-intensive work. Especially with the hands. Sorting out diseased bulbs, heading, planting and peeling the bulbs is all manual work. By adorning her artwork with embroidery - also handwork and labour-intensive - Hol makes the connection between manual labour and flower bulb growing.
The tulip bulb stands on the grounds of Hobaho, the company that also adopted the artwork.
