Get off your bike here and stare across the water of the Zuidkolk towards the centre of Delft. You will see the towers of the Oude Kerk and the Nieuwe Kerk, which were also visible here centuries ago. Master painter and Delft native Johannes Vermeer painted one of his most famous paintings 'View of Delft' from this point.
Did you know that researchers recently calculated that Vermeer made this painting on 3 or 4 September 1659, at around 8 a.m.? They used the sunlight on the artwork, studied old maps of Delft, used Google Earth to find and compare the location of buildings in the painting and did fieldwork in Delft itself.
The work of art on location is from 1999 and was made by Thomas Elshuis to mark this special spot.
