The lucrative smuggling of butter and margarine was caused by support measures in the dairy sector. Actually, dairy farmers were indirectly responsible for butter smuggling. It is therefore appropriate, during a cycling route with the theme "smuggling", to go for an ice cream at the Gerda Hoeve.
This ice cream farm in Schijf is less than a kilometre from the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. It has been making artisanal ice cream here since 1999 by using only fresh ingredients and fresh milk and cream. Various types of ice cream are available such as ice cream, sorbet ice cream and if you really want to splurge you can also order a coupe.
Take a seat on the cosy terrace in front of the old farmhouse and enjoy the view of the meadows.
