The name GASTROBAR★№44 refers to Yankee 44, as the Americans called the runway when they built the airport during World War II. From October 1944 to March 1945, this airport was the headquarters of the US army. The base in Maastricht was closer than the bases in northern France and southern Belgium. Because of this, the US Town Major, with the permission of the mayor and the surrounding villages, decided to use the land between Beek, Meerssen and Ulestraten for an air base. After some time, when World War II was over, it was handed over to the Dutch and they turned it into a civilian airport in August 1945.
