On the path alongside the football and basketball pitch on Sluipweg, you will find pear trees from which you can pick for free. It is part of a project by the municipality of Maastricht. The aim of the project is to learn about food and about your environment. In this context, several fruit orchards are available in the municipality.
There are orchards with apples, pears, cherries, plums, sweet chestnuts, walnuts and hazelnuts. On the route, we chose the pear orchard because pears are a great ingredient for a Limburg flan. The map on the CNME website also shows the other fruit orchards where you can pick your own fruit and nuts.
The fruits are untreated and pure nature. They may therefore have an infestation such as scabies, a worm or something else. In that case, carefully remove the affected parts, the remaining fruit will usually remain safe and nutritious. The pears are ripe from September onwards.
