Originally, Fort Vuren was a tower fort. From the tower you could easily see the enemy coming and it was easy to defend the fort. Later, heavier ammunition was introduced and the tower was no longer safe enough, so a wall of earth was built around the tower, also known as the Contrescarp. Because of this Contrescarp, the tower was almost invisible. Fort Vuren is part of the New Dutch Waterline which was started in 1845.
The fort houses a restaurant, campsite and hotel, and it is also possible to rent a bike here. But even if you are already cycling, you are welcome to come and have a look.
