Fort Sint-Andries - Rossum

N 51.799394576333 / E 5.3575605118572

Fort Sint-Andries is the westernmost tip of The Land of Maas and Waal, right at the intersection of these two mighty rivers. This area, crossed by ancient gullies, bears the traces of a rich history dating back to the early Iron Age.

In the writings of Tacitus, we find mentions of the Roman frontier, the Limes, which possibly ran through this area. Archaeological finds even suggest the presence of a Roman fort near the present lock canal. Fun historical fact: Rossum's church tower was built from tuff from this former fort.

During the Eighty Years' War, Fort Sint-Andries played a crucial role as a stronghold for the Spanish troops, a key position that was fiercely contested. After a year of bitter fighting, the fort came into Dutch hands, becoming a symbol of the Dutch struggle for freedom.

Although the fort lost its military significance over the centuries, it remains an intriguing place full of historical layers. From the Middle Ages to the Cold War, each period has left its mark on this special location.

Today, the ruins of Fort Sint-Andries invite you to relive history and enjoy the beautiful nature that surrounds it. Admire the area from the Air Guard Tower, not to be missed as you cycle past the ruins.
