During the French siege of the Netherlands around the year 1800, they had several defences built to defend against the English.
A fort was built on both sides of the Hellegat. The fort at Willemstad towards the south and Fort Duquesne. When the French were defeated here by Dutch soldiers in 1813, the fort was in Dutch possession. The name was then changed to Fort Prince Frederik.
Currently, the fort is mainly used for meetings and conferences.
