Fort Nassau was built in 1605 as part of the defence line around the ramparts of Retranchement. This fort was part of the network Prince Maurits had built to protect the Zwin channel and Antwerp from Spanish attacks during the Eighty Years' War. The strategically located fort reinforced control over this important coastal area.
Today, Fort Nassau is located in the nature reserve of the ramparts. It is a historic place where you can still see the contours of the old defences. Surrounded by greenery and water, it is not only a reminder of the turbulent past, but also an oasis for flora and fauna. The area offers tranquillity and natural beauty, while history remains tangible.
