Fort Maarsseveen is part of the New Dutch Waterline, a Unesco world heritage site since 2021. This unique, nineteenth-century defence system, which used the flooding of pieces of land to hold back the enemy, has become redundant with the advent of air travel, so all the forts are slowly being repurposed.
This includes Fort Maarsseveen, which is now a breeding ground for art & culture. Therefore, there is always something to see and often to experience, listen or do. The terrace in front of the fort is a well-kept secret. In the first rays of the sun, out of the wind, you can sit there wonderfully. Fort Maarssenveen is therefore popular as a stop during a cycling or walking tour, to catch your breath and relax over a cup of coffee, a drink or a (simple) lunch.
