Fort Erfprins, just west of Den Helder, is the largest fortress in the Netherlands. It has a surface area of 49 hectares. At present, the fort is still in use: it is the training camp for the School for Maritime Training, Operations and Education and for the Royal Netherlands Navy Technical Training.
The fact that the fort is there is thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte. He wanted to make Den Helder the 'Gibraltar of the North' and built a number of forts for this purpose. The fort does not look much different than when it was built. Guided tours are possible on the first Saturday of the month from April through October. Registration is required.
