The Hollandscheveld forest area in Drenthe is a beautiful, green area full of variation. You will find vast forests of deciduous and coniferous trees, quiet sandy paths and open stretches of heathland. It is one of the oldest forests in Drenthe. Yet it did not arise naturally: everything was created by man.
This was once a place where peat workers toiled to extract peat. Traces of that time, such as old peat canals and cap holes, can still be seen. In the early 19th century, trees were planted on the peat land. The so-called quarters, or peat canals of yore, are in many places up to 3 metres lower than the trees. A unique sight: high steep walls topped by the deep green trees.
Meanwhile, the area has been handed over to nature as much as possible. Hear the call of a woodpecker, see a roe deer leaping away or listen to the many songbirds. The mix of dry stretches and wet areas creates a great diversity of plants, from mosses to ferns.
