It remains an extraordinary image: a patch of forest with its own food in the middle of a busy city. The food forest is also known as ‘the paradise of lazy farmers’. Why? Unlike other farmers, there is no ploughing, sowing, fertilising and spraying here. Instead, people plant and harvest endlessly (seeds, flowers, tubers, nuts, etc.). The fruit almost falls off the trees by itself!
This Food Forest in Nijmegen was started from an initiative of several organisations and subsidised by Greenchoice. It was set up according to the principles of permaculture: a movement in agriculture based on perennials instead of annual crops. It is a nature-friendly way of growing food and every year the food forest builds up more biomass. Want to try the bio meals? Take a seat at Restaurant the New Shop and choose from one of the meals with ingredients from the food forest.
