During the war, the water in Nieuwerkerk stood about half a metre high, part of the land was flooded against German invasion. Residents of Nieuwerkerk therefore did not immediately worry, surely the water will not rise higher than then so soon? From Ouwerkerk, the water came rapidly towards the polder. The water continued to rise. Residents of the small village climbed on their roofs and tried to stay afloat on rafts. Unfortunately, here too, like in Ouwerkerk, 1 in 6 people died.
After two months, the water in Nieuwerkerk is still up to the roofs, as high as the day of the disaster.
