Ouwerkerk is one of the villages hardest hit by the Watersnoodramp, the freezing cold sea water entered the small village in waves. Some 91 people died in Ouwerkerk, meaning that as many as 1 in 6 people did not survive the disaster.
The photo shows the tidal hole where the water flowed into the land with enormous force. The blowhole was closed with caissons. This concrete structure now houses the Watersnoodmuseum. The second photo shows the placement of the caissons. Close to the museum, you will also find an impressive monument, which still commemorates the '53 disaster.
