Water has brought much good to Zeeland. But over the centuries, storm surges have sometimes had the upper hand. During the North Sea flood of 1953, 62 residents of Kruiningen lost their lives. In memory of the flood disaster, the municipality commissioned Jan Wolkers to create a monument. The first statue he designed was rejected. For his second design, he chose a bronze statue of a young woman pressing a drowned child against her, of which only the hand is still visible. The statue from 1957 stands next to the Johanneskerk in Kruiningen.
The pedestal displays a number of lines of poetry by Adriaan Roland Holst. Since 2013, the names of the victims from Kruiningen who died in the 1953 North Sea Flood have been listed also on the pedestal of the statue.
