A small stroke of luck was, that the centre of Burgh-Haamstede was slightly elevated. This allowed people from the region to find dry shelter here while the water washed away their homes. The streets around the centre flooded again with every flood.
The photo shows Burgh-Haamstede from the air, at least what is left of it. You can also see a house with Molen de Graanhalm in the background. This mill now houses a shop and pancake restaurant.
