This statue is a monument to the fishermen who died during the First World War. The sad-looking fisherwoman in traditional costume has placed her hands on her son's shoulders. He has removed his cap and holds it in his hands in front of him. At the bottom of the rectangular plinth is a relief depicting a lugger (fishing boat) being stopped by a submarine. This granite sculpture was offered and unveiled in 1930 by Princess Juliana, who studied in Leiden and lived in Katwijk aan Zee from 1927 to 1929.
Dutch sculptor and illustrator Louis van der Noordaa (The Hague, 1894-1945) designed the sculpture in collaboration with architect Herman van der Kloot Meijburg (Oudshoorn, 1875-1961).
