Keeping Belgian Blue cows once started as a hobby for farmers Kees and Monique Jansen, but it soon grew into a business. Today, 150 beef cows live on D'n Heerd Farm in Dongen.
The cows are truly free-range. When the females are pregnant, they graze in the nature reserve near Loon op Zand. When they go into labour, they return to the stable and stay in the straw pen for several weeks. Once the calf is born, it stays with its mother for at least six months.
The animals are fed a varied diet sourced as much as possible from their own land, and are allowed to go wherever they want. They are given time to grow. You can taste that in the honest-to-goodness meat.
The farm shop sells both products from the land and meat products from its own cows. Curious about what life on the farm is like? Come along and take a look around the farm or book an excursion where Monique will take you to see the cows in the special roundhouse, the first round barn in North Brabant.
