Exloo's old sheepfold with thatched roof stands in the middle of the village, right next to the brink. Several farmers used to have sheep. These were gathered every day on the brink and then taken to the heath by the shepherd.
By now, the 250 genuine Drenthe Heath Sheep of Exloo's flock usually stay in the sheepfold at night. But in the spring and summer months (from April to October), every day at 10.00 in the morning, the shepherd walks with the flock and accompanying dogs right through the village to graze on the heath of the neighbouring Molenveld nature reserve. They usually return around 4pm. During hot summer days, the shepherd may choose to leave earlier and also return earlier. The most up-to-date information on this is on the flock's website.
If you want to see the flock grazing during the day, cycle out of the village via Oude Kampweg. There, follow the dirt track along Molenveld nature reserve. They can usually be found there.
