The Euromast was built in 1960, on the occasion of the Floriade. The construction took two years. The foundation consists of 131 concrete piles, the first of which was officially struck by Mayor Van Walsum, holding a block of reinforced concrete weighing no less than 1,900,000 kilograms!
The name Euromast was carefully chosen. 'Euro' because Rotterdam is in the heart of the Euromarket area, and 'mast' because not only the Dutch know what that is, but also Englishmen, Germans, Swedes, Norwegians and Danes.
At a height of 100 metres, two restaurants were built with a view in all directions. In the 1960s, the Euromast was 101 metres high, enough to tower above the skyline of the city on the Maas. But Rotterdam's pride was overtaken left and right by other buildings. With the installation of the Space Tower in 1970, another eighty-five metres were added. This made the Euromast the highest building in Rotterdam again.
