The Ermelo sheepfold was originally a private initiative to which the Ermelo municipality responded. In December 2002, the Stichting Schaperift Ermelo started building the sheep pen and the visitor centre and in May 2003 the pen was completed and the first sheep could enter.
The design of the cage is based on other sheep pens found on the Veluwe and is said to be the largest in the Netherlands. The wood was donated to the foundation by the Ermelo Municipality and comes from the Ermelo municipal forests. It is mainly oak and Douglas fir wood that bears the FSC quality mark. The cage can house up to 400 Veluwe Heath Sheep (including lambs).
