We are now on the Lijdijkweg in Oostkapelle. The beautiful painting the Elm Avenue on the Lijdijkweg in Oostkapelle by artist Jacoba van Heemskerck could very well be based on these trees. The 1909 painting, depicting the gracefully shaped avenue of elms in fascinating colours, shows that the artists of Domburg also found their inspiration in the countryside of Zeeland.
Artist Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876-1923) went through a similar development as Mondrian during her years in Domburg. She too started painting more and more what she saw. Both artists regularly depicted the same subjects. Some art experts sometimes refer to Jacoba as the female Mondrian. Whereas Mondrian's work became increasingly rigid in geometry during his lifetime, Jacoba's work remains looser.
The work is privately owned, but is occasionally exhibited.
