Eijsden Castle - Eijsden
In the Limburg village of Eijsden, with it's white-painted houses with wooden shutters, a national monument is located on the Meuse; Kasteel Eijsden. In the early Middle Ages, the seigniory of Eijsden already had a court, which was replaced in 1636 by the current water castle, which is fully enclosed and located in a pleasure garden. A pleasure garden is an enclosed park laid out to stimulate the senses by the scent, colour and shape of specially cultivated trees, plants and shrubs.
In the 18th century, the manor house with castle farm was substantially rebuilt and in the 19th century it received a historicising restoration. The castle is privately owned but the park is freely accessible.
