The Zeeland village of IJzendijke has been nicknamed ‘Petit Paris’ for years. This is because of the French influences that have remained palpable here throughout the centuries. During the Eighty Years' War, French engineers helped build the fortifications, and during the Napoleonic era, the village played a role again. The cosy streets and atmospheric squares give IJzendijke an almost French feel.
To add to this special nickname, the village council decided to have a unique work of art installed: a four-metre-high replica of the Eiffel Tower, designed by Benno Hinneman of an engineering firm in Oostburg. Hinneman donated the tower to the village, where it is not only a nod to Paris, but also serves a practical purpose. The tower acts as a beacon so that passers-by do not miss the only access road to the village.
So before cycling into the cosy village, be sure to take a look at this petit version of the Eiffel Tower.
