The Eempolder near Eemnes is a unique landscape because of its special genesis. Originally a swampy swamp with a dry sand bump here and there, today it is wet grassland. Thanks to kilometres of ditches, the groundwater level remains far enough below ground level. This entire area was reclaimed in the 13th century and cultivated into farmland in the following centuries.
In the early 20th century, this entire landscape was flooded by the 1916 Storm Surge. The raging Zuiderzee was pushed up from the North Sea by the storm, causing a three-metre-high column of water to race across the land. Eemnes was spared by the high Wakkerendijk. Baarn, which at the time was seven kilometres away, did experience limited flooding.
